PUBLIC CONSULTATION
The approximately 39-hectare site is a part of the former Woodford Aerodrome and is located to the south of the existing Woodford Garden Village development. To the south-west of the site is Old Hall Lane and the Avro Golf Club and to the north-east is the Avro Heritage Centre. Farmland lies to the east and west and a wooded area is positioned to the south-east.
Until 2011, it was occupied by warehouses and infrastructure associated with the Woodford Aerodrome which was opened by the Avro company after the First World War on land previously known as New Hall Farm. In early 1930, concrete runways were laid and later extended to accommodate larger aircraft like the Avro Vulcan.
This aviation history is celebrated in both the popular Avro Heritage Museum and also in the layout and retained sections of runway that run through the new Garden Village.
The site now comprises areas of open grassland, stockpiled materials and bare ground where demolition works have been carried out.
The vacant former Oxford Aviation buildings occupy an area on the north-eastern portion of the site. They are the only large structure left, aside from minor buildings and the Old Pilot’s Lodge.
